Wooden incense holders are probably the most popular type of incense burner.  They come in a variety of shapes, sizes, and designs.  They provide a stable and secure platform for burning incense sticks and most often can also be used to burn incense cones as well (providing they have the appropriate cone holder too).  They are simple and easy to use - just place the incense stick in the hole, light the end of the stick, and let the aroma fill the room.
